BEA Smart Card Validators

Smart Card Validators can be used as part of the BEA system.

Ob-board validators can be linked electronically to fareboxes using an IrDA port. With this arrangement, transactions using the validator are stored by the host farebox for later uploading to the Operations Terminal.

On-board validators can also be used on a standalone basis. For example, on specialized transit services where cash transactions are infrequent, the validator can be used as an economical means to allow for card use without the large farebox.

Handheld validators bring the validation process to the location of either the customer or the smart card. For example, a group home using specialized transit services may wish to pay for traveller’s trips using a common card that does not accompany the rider. The validator can be taken to the door to record the trip prior to the customer boarding the vehicle. In other cases, cards may be read from a customer’s pocket or wallet using the handheld unit.

Each transaction, like those at the farebox, takes just a few seconds and is fully secure.
