BEA Transit Solutions is the North American subsidiary of Grupo BEA, which is a leading transit technology solutions provider based in Guadalajara, Mexico. In turn, Grupo BEA is a unit of Idear Electronica, a major manufacturer of electronic systems and components.
For over 15 years, Grupo BEA has designed, manufactured and installed sophisticated automatic passenger counting (APC) systems that enable transit operators to manage their fare collection processes effectively and efficiently.
With over 15,000 APC devices successfully in operation by transit operators and systems in over 80 cities in eight countries, Grupo BEA has become a world leader in APC solutions by focus sing on improving transit productivity through technological innovation.
In 2001, in response to overwhelming demand from its transit customers, Grupo BEA expanded its transit reach by developing and marketing a sophisticated fare payment system based the use of secure, contact-less smart card technology.
Through another subsidiary, Intelligent Transaction Systems de Mexico, Grupo BEA has since sold smart card, automated fare collection (AFC) systems throughout Mexico for use by over 100 transit operators. By early 2007, BEA’s transit customers had over 1,000,000 smart cards in active circulation.
The BEA System
BEA’s AFC system can be used in many, diverse applications including light rail, bus rapid transit, conventional bus operations, demand responsive transit and specialized transit for persons with disabilities.
The BEA system can be used for fare payment at fare gates and turnstiles in stations. It can be used on-board vehicles through standalone validators or as part of BEA’s smart farebox system.
Smart cards can be reloadable or disposable. The cards are secure and can be personalized by using BEA’s terminals. Value can be added to reloadable cards through attended or unattended add value machines. Transit riders can also reload value remotely by telephone or Internet.
